SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Junior forward
Kyle Barrett scored with less than a second left in the second overtime period, lifting the Skidmore College men's soccer team to a dramatic 1-0 victory over Williams, in non-league action at Wachenheim Field Wednesday night.
Skidmore (6-1-3) remains unbeaten in its last nine contests. Williams takes the tough loss to fall to 4-3-1.
With less than 30 seconds left in the second overtime, Williams turned the ball over near midfield. With the Thoroughbreds driving the other way, senior midfielder
Mike Park launched a free kick that was knocked away by the Williams defense. The ball found junior
David Braman outside of the penalty box with four seconds left, who kicked a desperation shot back into the box. The ball bounced around and somehow found Barrett to the right of the penalty spot with under a second left, who knocked it in to beat the buzzer.
The Thoroughbreds won despite being outshot by the Ephs by a 21-13 margin, including an 8-4 margin with shots on net.
The first half saw little scoring but plenty of opportunities for each side. Williams had a few chances at net, most notably on a corner kick opportunity in the 32
nd minute. Off the corner, the ball was deflected off a Williams player, but Williams couldn't corral the rebound as Braman collected the loose ball and kicked it out of play. Off the corner, Skidmore immediately got on the break with numbers, but the Thoroughbreds couldn't make the connection as Williams' defense got back just in time.
The second half began with Williams dominating possession, and the shot count, as Skidmore parried away chance after Williams chance. The Ephs best chance of the night came in the 50
th minute. Bobby Fabricant played a cross from the right wing into the center of the penalty box. The ball would eventually find Gregory Andreou on the left side, who tried to one-time the feed high into net. Skidmore junior goalie
Sebastian Bosch was right on time, tipping the certain goal away to sophomore midfielder
Shoyo Yanagihara, who headed the rebound out of play.
Skidmore almost took the lead on a pair of opportunities late in regulation. In the 83
rd minute, Skidmore had a two-on-one break. Freshman midfielder
Isaac Myran had the ball with pace, going up the left side. He fed a pass past the defender across field to trailing sophomore midfielder
Stanley Langyintuo on the right. Langyintuo squared up and fired, but the low shot was blocked by Williams midfielder Jules Olberg to end the threat.
With seconds remaining in regulation, Myran lined up for a quick corner kick opportunity. He launched the kick with two seconds to go and found Park, who headed the chance wide as the clock ran out and the teams prepared for overtime.
The Thoroughbreds would then survive early Williams pressure for most of the overtime sessions, before converting on its only chance of the second overtime to win the contest.
Bosch earned his fourth shutout in net for the Thoroughbreds, stopping all eight Williams shots on target.
Skidmore will return to Liberty League action this Saturday, as it plays host to Vassar in a potential battle for first place in the league standings at Wachenheim Field at 2 p.m., as part of the Skidmore Homecoming Weekend festivities.
