Thoroughbreds tame Engineers to stay perfect in Liberty League

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College women's basketball team remained unbeaten in Liberty League play with a 64-48 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Friday night at the Williamson Center.

The Thoroughbreds (5-5, 3-0 Liberty League) are in a three-way tie for first place with Ithaca and RIT. The Engineers (6-4, 2-1) lose for the first time in conference play.

Skidmore's Kelly Donnelly recorded her 35th career double/double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. The two-time All-American added four assists and three steals. It was Donnelly's 49th straight game in double figures.

Taylor Ong scored 11 points off the bench, going 5-8 (62.5%) from the floor. Veronica Moceri contributed a career-high six assists to go along with eight points.

LaKissa Martin was the lone RPI player in double figures with 14 points. Elizabeth Eckhardt and Sam Krumbhaer scored nine each.

Both teams struggled at the start, with RPI taking full advantage of the shot clock in an attempt to slow the Thoroughbreds down. Skidmore settled in late in the first quarter when Donnelly took over, scoring six straight points over the final 50 seconds to put the Thoroughbreds in front 16-12 at the first break.  Skidmore extended the lead to 31-21 at the end of the half.

RPI scored the first points of the third quarter on an Eckhardt fastbreak to cut it to 31-23. Skidmore responded with a 9-0 run to break it open 40-23. Ari Fustini had two three-pointers to key the offensive spurt.. The Engineers were unable to get any closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Skidmore held RPI to its lowest field goal percentage of the season, 29% on 18-62 shooting from the floor. The Thoroughbreds were 26-58 (44.8%) from the floor.

Skidmore continues its home Liberty League weekend Saturday at 2 p.m. against Union. The Engineers travel to Ithaca for a 2 p.m. game.

COACH BENNETT:
"Tonight we had a full team effort and everyone chipping in gave us the win. It took us a while to get our offensive game in gear and to anchor down defensively but when we did you could see the shift in how we performed on both ends of the floor. It was good to see Taylor have a good night. She works so hard and is very talented. She slowed down a little tonight and the game came to her that was good to see.

Our defense is the cornerstone to our success and at times it looked great at other times it looked worse than the weekend weather forecast. We still have to clean some things up and be consistent on our principles and follow the scout. Offensively we are giving the ball away too much. Gambling, being careless and reckless with the ball. We discuss good passes and easy passes versus home run looks and just passing to an open player. Everything equals two or three points but how you get those points makes the difference in whether you get 15 or 20 to your opponents 5 or 6 or whether you get 10 and they get 10 too."
