The win gives Skidmore the season sweep of the Engineers and a weekend Liberty League sweep.
Veronica Moceri was 6 for 6 from the stripe in overtime, while Donnelly was 3 for 4. Through the entire contest, Donnelly made 10 of 19 shots from the floor and 10 of 16 from the free throw line, while also pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds - all defensive - with two assists and a steal in 41 minutes. Moceri scored 21 points, including 16 of 16 from the free throw line, with four rebounds, three assist and two steals in a game-high 42 minutes.Â
RPI was paced by Elizabeth Eckhardt, who had 21 points, including four three-pointers, in 38 minutes before fouling out. She was one of four starters who were disqualified. Sam Krumbhaar had 17 points with five rebounds and two assists in 33 minutes off the bench. Ines Ortea scored 13 points, also from the bench.
The game was close throughout with the Thoroughbreds holding a 24-23 edge after the first 20 minutes. RPI scored the game's first six points on three layups, two from senior center Shaina Iton, but Skidmore answered with the next four points. A long three-pointer by Eckhardt as the shot clock wound down made it 9-4 for Rensselaer and the teams went on to trade baskets, ending with
Ari Fustini hitting a three-pointer for the visitors to close the first frame.
Skidmore carried the momentum into the second quarter, scoring the first 13 points for a 24-16 lead. Fustini nailed another long three before Eckhardt answered the 16-0 run with a triple of her own with 2:18 to play in the half. Rensselaer then got baskets from Kate Goodell and Eckhardt to cut the deficit to one at the break.
Eckhardt led all players with 11 first half points, while Fustini had six and Donnelly recorded eight for the visitors, who were forced into 10 turnovers in the first half.
The third quarter was similar to the first two with both teams making runs – seven straight points for Rensselaer and six in a row for Skidmore. The score was 38-38 going into the fourth.
Following a pair of LaKissa Martin free throws, RPI held a seven-point edge (57-50) with 2:51 remaining in regulation, but the Thoroughbreds got five straight free throws from Donnelly to make it 57-55 with 1:11 to play. Rensselaer went back ahead by four points (59-55) on two Ortea free throws, but Moceri countered to make it a two-point game. The score eventually got to 61-59 for the Engineers before Skidmore's
Taylor Ong made a layup with 4.8 seconds left to force extra time.
The game was within one shot either way until there were 11 seconds left and Moceri once again buried two from the stripe.Â
