Shorthanded Thoroughbreds battle back to tie Hobart

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.— Skidmore College freshman defender Shaun Franz scored his first collegiate goal in the 86th minute to salvage a 1-1 Liberty League tie against Hobart College Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.

The 22nd ranked Thoroughbreds remain unbeaten with a 4-0-2 overall record, the team's best start since going 5-0 in 2006. Skidmore is 2-0 in league play.  Hobart is 2-2-2 and 0-0-1.

The game was choppy from the start with the teams combining for 21 first half fouls. Skidmore had the first legitimate scoring chance in the 14th minute when Augustine Okoye's penalty kick ricocheted off the lower half of the cross bar.

The physical play continued with a tie up in Hobart's defensive end in the 35th minute that resulted in a Skidmore red card and a pair of Statesmen yellows.

Hobart took advantage of the extra player, scoring the game's first goal on a corner at 37:42 when Hunter Ctrichlow's header bounced off a Thoroughbred defender.

Play settled down in the second half with both teams looking at decent scoring opportunities. In the 76th minute, Statesmen midfielder August Martini worked his way past three Skidmore defenders for an open shot in the box that was denied by a diving Sebastian Bosch.

The Thoroughbreds quickly countered and earned their first corner of the game 30 seconds later. Okoye's shot went just high, but Skidmore continued to pressure the Statesmen.

The hard worked paid off in the 86th minute with another Thoroughbred corner. Brennan Mitrolka placed the ball well into the box to Will Greening who's point blank shot was saved by Hobart goalie Alec Kaminer. Okoye collected the rebound and fired another shot on Kaminer who was able to stop it, but the shot's momentum left the ball in front for Franz to put home for the equalizer.

Hobart had a 4-1 shots on goal advantage in the overtime, but Bosch stopped all four chances to preserve the tie.

Hobart had a 24-15 shot and 5-3 corner advantage. The teams combined for 37 fouls and seven yellow cards.

Bosch had eight total saves, while Kaminer had seven.

Skidmore is at Williams on Sept. 27 for a 4 p.m. game.
