WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Skidmore College softball team dropped a pair of road games to Williams in midweek non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. Skidmore fell 8-0 in five innings in game one and 4-1 in game two.
Skidmore drops to 8-14 overall with Liberty League play looming this weekend. Williams improves to 11-9.
Skidmore was unable to get its bats going consistently in game one, only tallying two hits in five innings. The Thoroughbreds' best chance came in the fifth inning, facing a 5-0 deficit.
Morgan Grady and
Heather Mak drew walks to lead the frame, then Grady advanced to third on a fielder's choice with one out. With two outs and runners on second (
Karly Fishkin) and third, Williams pitcher Mackenzie Murphy forced
Lizette Roman-Johnston to hit a grounder up the middle, as Murphy threw her out at first to end the threat.
Roman-Johnston and Fishkin tallied hits while Mak walked twice to lead the Thoroughbreds in game one.
Amanda Carilli struck out one batter in four innings as the pitcher of record.
Williams hit three home runs in the victory, and Murphy struck out two batters in five scoreless in the victory.
In game two, after Williams jumped out to a 4-0 lead, Skidmore threatened to rally in the top of the sixth.
Emily Popp drew a one-out, bases-loaded walk to get Skidmore on the board. With two outs and bases still loaded. Williams reliever Rebecca Duncan forced Jill Strelickis to ground out to third base to get out of a major jam.
Lauren Fortunato led the Thoroughbreds with a 2-for-2 effort, adding a walk. Fishkin recorded a hit and scored a run.
Emily Popp allowed four runs in six innings, striking out a batter.
Skidmore begins Liberty League play on Saturday when RIT comes to town for a pair of contests at Wagner Park, beginning at 1 p.m.
