Thoroughbreds top Clarkson in regular season finale

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's basketball team shook off a slow start, rallying to defeat Clarkson 67-57 in the regular season finale at the Williamson Sports Center Sunday afternoon.

The Thoroughbreds finish the regular season at 17-8 overall, and are the number one seed after a 13-3 record in Liberty League play. Clarkson ends the regular season with a 15-10 record overall, and a 10-6 mark in league play. The Thoroughbreds will host the fourth seeded Golden Knights on Wednesday in the Liberty League Semifinals, beginning at 6 p.m.

Kelly Donnelly led the Thoroughbreds with yet another double-double, scoring 20 points and 14 rebounds. The guard added three steals and two blocks. Ari Fustini added 10 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Veronica Moceri added nine points and seven rebounds, and Migle Vilunaite added nine points and three rebounds.

Three Golden Knights scored in double-figures, led by Madison Shea's 13 points. Shea added seven steals and five rebounds. Devin Sorell and Kathleen Coloney each added 12 points.

The Thoroughbreds got off to a slow start, with turnovers being the main culprit, as Clarkson led Skidmore 21-9 after 10 minutes. The Thoroughbreds got going for most of the second quarter, outscoring Clarkson 16-5 in the last 7:38 of the half. With 48 seconds to go, Fustini found Vilunaite, who finished with the layup to reduce the deficit to 28-25. After a missed shot by Clarkson with a few seconds left, Donnelly grabbed the long rebound, turned, and nailed a bank shot from half court, just beating the buzzer to tie the game at 28.

Skidmore shot the lights out after halftime, knocking down a blistering 52 percent from the field in the second half to hold the Golden Knights at bay. Consecutive treys by Fustini and Meaghan Flanagan pushed the lead to double digits, at 44-34 in the third quarter. Clarkson shrunk the lead to as few as five points on a few occasions, the latest on a Molly Stewart three-point play with 6:48 to go in regulation. Vilunaite scored in the post on the next possession, and Moceri knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 55-45, putting the game away for good.

The Thoroughbreds held the Golden Knights to 36 percent shooting from the field in the contest, and 3-for-15 from 3-point range. Skidmore also outrebounded Clarkson 44-28.
