WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Skidmore College women's soccer team hit the road for the first time in the 2016 season, falling to No. 1 Williams College, 2-0 at Cole Field on a warm Sunday afternoon. The Thoroughbreds will return home, hosting Plattsburgh on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
Skidmore (2-1) hung in against Williams, the top-ranked team in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) rankings. The Ephs (3-0) got on the board early in the eighth minute, on an Alison Lu goal. After a shot was blocked by the Thoroughbred defense, Lu eventually corralled the rebound and scored.
Despite being outshot by Williams, 23-6, Skidmore had a few opportunities to knot the game up. In the 37th minute, after a buildup of play,
Emma Basso unleashed a shot that was blocked by the Williams defense. Near the end of the half,
Nicole LoRusso had a shot at the net, but the shot sailed just wide.
Williams scored an insurance goal in the 82nd minute by Nkem Iregbulem. Iregbulem nearly had a second in the 86th minute on a penalty shot, but
Alyssa Rollins made a tremendous diving save, stopping the shot. Rollins made a season-high 10 saves in the contest.
