Thoroughbreds back in Liberty League final

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The third seed Skidmore College field hockey team beat second seed Vassar College, 3-1 Wednesday night in the Liberty League semifinals.

The 17th ranked Thoroughbreds host #15 Rochester in Saturday's championship game. Gametime is 1 p.m. The Yellowjackets upset top seed William Smith 2-1. Skidmore has won six of the last eight league titles, the last time in 2014.

Skidmore (14-5) avenged a 2-1 road loss to the Brewers (14-4) on Oct. 15.

The Thoroughbreds set the tone early when Kayla Rose scored off a deflection in front from Marissa Folts, just 3:23 into the game.

Scoring chances were limited the remainder of the first half, with the teams combining for only five total shots. Skidmore's lone shot on goal was the Rose goal.

Play opened up a little more in the second half. Miranda Davenport tallied her eight of the season from Meaghan Lynch on a rebound at 38:17 to make it 2-0. Vassar got on the board at 57:50 on a Megan Caveny deflection.

Rose got an insurance goal at 64:49 when Davenport fed her a pass across the goal mouth that she converted for the 3-1 final.

Vassar outshot Skidmore 11-8 and had a big 11-2 penalty corner advantage. Elizabeth Coughlin recorded three saves in goal for the win, including a key stop off a corner with 4:00 to play.
