SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's soccer team closed out its season with a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Nazareth at Wachenheim Field on a cold and wet Saturday afternoon.
Skidmore's final record stands at 6-7-2, snapping a five-game unbeaten streak. Nazareth improves to 14-2-2 with the victory.
Nazareth scored the lone tally on a Julia Delgatti goal in the 58th minute. Michaela Soules beat her defender deep in the penalty box, dancing along the goal line to the right of the net, finding Delgatti at the net, who tipped it in.
The Thoroughbreds nearly tied it in the 68th minute, when
Nicole LoRusso found
Emily Mendes on a floating through ball in the box. Mendes' first touch was just too strong, as the ball just bounced wide. Two minutes later,
Christina Sanzari gave Skidmore its best chance of tying the game, as her cross found
Emily Saliterman deep in the box, as she stayed onsides to force the one-on-one opportunity with the goalie. Her low shot was just deflected by Nazareth goalie Allison Dobles, who parried it away on the diving attempt.
Skidmore outshot the Golden Flyers 10-7, in what was a possession-oriented game from both sides. Skidmore attempted seven shots on goal, to two for Nazareth.
Deidre Walsh made one save for the Thoroughbreds in goal in the first half, with
Alyssa Rollins coming in for the final 45 minutes. Dobles made seven saves to lead all goalkeepers.
Prior to the game, Skidmore honored its six senior student-athletes: goalkeeper Walsh, defenders LoRusso and
Elizabeth Schaeffer, midfielders
Kelly O'Donnell and
Jacqueline Carames, and midfielder/forward Saliterman.
