SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team clinched a 2016 Liberty League postseason berth, despite falling to Union 3-2 in the game's final minute at Wachenheim Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Thoroughbreds are seeded fourth, and will take on Hobart, the top overall seed on Wednesday. The time will be determined at a later date. Skidmore caps off the regular season with a 4-2-2 record in conference play, and a 7-6-2 record overall.
Union finishes its season at 10-6-1 and 3-4-1 in conference play, placing sixth.
Before the contest, Skidmore honored its six senior student-athletes: goalkeeper
Derrick Yam, defenders Michael Lemnios,
Adebare Oyeniyi, and
Yuta Nakagawa, and midfielders
Tesfaye Paine and
Nick Masiero.
Right off the bat, Skidmore took the early lead. On the break,
Kevin Santos sent a low pass into the box, finding
Austin Okoye in stride, for his seventh goal of the season, giving the Thoroughbreds the advantage in the eighth minute.
Union answered, tying the contest in the second half. David Olio III sent a cross from the right wing into the penalty box to Andrew Fontaine. Fontaine's shot from the top of the box curled in to beat Yam in the 59th minute.
In the 73rd minute, a pair of impressive stops by the Union defense temporarily kept the game level. A Skidmore corner kick by
Mike Park found Oyeniyi in the box, who headed the feed past Union goalkeeper John Weitzman towards the net. Fontaine, on the goal line, kicked the ball away right before it fell into the net. The ball was ricocheted to Oyeniyi, who attempted an impressive bicycle kick, high, but this one just went wide to the left of the net.
The Okoye/Santos combination worked again for the Thoroughbreds in the 83rd minute. This time it was Okoye who found Santos on a long through pass. Santos stayed onside, beating the Union defenders, and finishing low past a diving Weitzman into the net.
Union came right back, tying the game in the 85th minute. An attempted clear by the Skidmore defense on a free kick opportunity went awry, and Vincent Oliveto got to the ball, beating a diving Yam, who nearly got to the ball.
In the 89th minute, the officials gave Park a red card for the sliding challenge. Union took advantage just a minute later, with 17 seconds remaining in the contest, as Kienan Smith scored off a header on a Fontaine corner kick.
Oyeniyi had the ball deep in Union territory in the game's final seconds, but his cross went just left of the goal, as the clock ran out.
Shots were even at 12 for both teams, and Skidmore held a 4-3 corner kick advantage.
