Clarkson pulls away in second half for 88-78 win over Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Clarkson University women's basketball team took advantage of 44 trips to the line on the way to an 88-78 Liberty League win over Skidmore College, Tuesday night at the Williamson Center.
 
The Thoroughbreds stand at 8-7 overall and 3-4 in Liberty League play. The Golden Knights have won six straight to move to 11-4 and 6-2.
 
Kelly Donnelly led three Skidmore players in double figures with 20 points. Caroline Niland scored 10 and Veronica Moceri added 11 points and two steals.
 
Ashley Loggins paced Clarkson with 24 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, and five steals.  Madison Shea scored 19 of her 23 points from the free throw line in the second half.
 
The first half was tight with the Golden Knights able to take a five point lead, 37-32 into the locker room.
 
The second half saw Clarkson lead by as many as 16 thanks to making 30-of-35 free throws after only nine trips to the line in the first half.
 
Skidmore wouldn't go away easily. Down 73-58 with 4:32 to play, the Thoroughbreds used a 10-2 run to cut it to seven, 75-68 at the 1:41 mark. Moceri scored seven of the 10 points. The Golden Knights would knock down 10-of-12 free throw attempts the rest of the way for the 88-78 win.
 
For the game, Clarkson hit 34-of-44 free throws, while Skidmore went 25-for-29. The teams were whistled for a combined 53 fouls.
 
The Thoroughbreds return to the Williamson Center court Friday night at 6 p.m. against Union College.
