Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Thoroughbreds roll to 5-1 win against Canton

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College men's soccer team got goals from five different players in a 5-1 non-conference win against SUNY Canton in a physical and scrappy game, Saturday evening at Wachenheim Field.

The two teams combined for 36 fouls on the day, including six yellow cards and one red card.

The Thoroughbreds go to 2-1, while the Kangaroos, who have lost their last eight contests, go to 0-5.

Skidmore jumped out to a 1-0 lead 1:13 into the game on Mario Hyman's first goal of the season. Ben Caples delivered a long throw-in and Canton goalkeeper Austin Lamay collided with his defender while attempting to punch the ball clear. The ball fell to Hyman for the easiest of finishes into the empty net.

Will Berg doubled the Thoroughbreds lead in the 26th minute, running onto Augustine Okoye's perfectly threaded pass and slotting a shot into the bottom left corner.

The Kangaroos cut their deficit to one just over seven minutes later as Tyler Gallagher's long-range effort was directed in off the head of a Skidmore defender, but Kevin Santos restored the Thoroughbreds two-goal lead heading into the half in the 43rd minute.

Nick Masiero broke down the left wing and picked out Santos with a cross, and he drilled a strike back across his body into the bottom left corner to make it 3-1 at the break.

Skidmore continued to press early in the second half and it was rewarded in the 53rd minute. Adebare Oyeniyi clipped a ball over the Canton defensive line and Okoye was the quickest to react, chipping a shot over a charging Lamay.

Oyeniyi put the game out of reach in the 72nd minute with his second goal of the season, heading home Zack Widmann's service from the right wing.

The Thoroughbreds outshot the Kangaroos 19-11, while corners were even at 4-4. Danny Ebenstein made four saves in goal for Skidmore in his first start of the season. Lamay finished with five saves in 75:45, while Patrick Anunziatta made four saves in the final 14:15.

Skidmore, which scored five goals in a game for the first time since 2008, travels to Williams Tuesday, Sept. 15 for a 4:30 p.m. contest.
