Women's basketball's historic run ends with 62-60 overtime loss to St. John Fisher

Medford, Mass.—The Skidmore College women's basketball team's historic season came to a close with a heartbreaking 62-60 overtime loss to St. John Fisher in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship tournament, Friday night at Tufts University.

Lindsey Davis knocked down her second 3-pointer of overtime to give the Thoroughbreds (17-11) a 60-59 lead with 1:28 to play, but Sydney Bloomstein answered back with a jumper on the ensuing Fisher possession. Mary Kate Cusack recorded a steal on Skidmore's next trip down the floor and Portia Velasco hit one of two free throws, giving the Cardinals (22-6) a 62-60 lead with 3.6 seconds left on the clock. Molly McLaughlin had one final shot, but her three from just inside half court wrung out off the back rim.

The Thoroughbreds, who captured the program's first ever Liberty League title and NCAA Division III tournament berth, finish the season with a record of 17-11. The Cardinals improve to 22-6. The game was Skidmore's fifth overtime contest in its last nine outings.

Angela Botiba led Skidmore with a game-high 20 points on 9 of 16 shooting, also adding a game-high 14 rebounds. Davis finished with 16 points and Kelly Donnelly had nine points, four rebounds and three steals.

The Thoroughbreds jumped out to a 14-6 lead behind six points from Botiba and five from Donnelly, but the Cardinals responded with a 6-0 run to tie it up at 14-14. The Thoroughbreds managed to restore their six-point cushion with a 6-2 run capped by a Botiba layup, but again the Cardinals charged back with a 10-3 run, taking their first lead of the contest with 34 seconds remaining on a pair of Velasco free throws. Botiba battled her way to the basket for a layup on Skidmore's final possession to give the Thoroughbreds a 30-29 lead at the break.

The Cardinals controlled the early stages of the second half, using a 6-2 run to take a 35-32 lead. The teams traded baskets over the next 12 minutes before Portia Velasco gave Fisher its biggest lead of the contest with 5:26 to play, going coast-to-coast for a hoop and the harm after a recording a steal. Donnelly answered back with an and-1 on of free throws to tie it at 47-47 with 4:32 remaining. Fisher pulled in front 51-47 with four quick points, but again the Thoroughbreds came back four straight points from Botiba to tie it with 1:35 remaining. Skidmore had one final chance in regulation but Amber Holgate's layup at the buzzer rolled out off the rim.

Cusack knocked down threes on back-to-back Cardinals possession at the start of overtime to put Fisher in front 57-55. Davis gave the Thoroughbreds their second lead of the overtime, hitting a 3-pointer from the corner to make it 60-59 with 1:28 to play, but the lead was short lived. Bloomstein hit a 15-footer on Fisher's next possession and Cusack recorded her most important steal of the season at the defensive end of the floor.  Velasco missed her second free throw following an intentional foul giving Skidmore one final prayer, but McLaughlin's half-court shot clanked off the back rim as time expired.

Velasco had a team-high 17 points and three steals. Cusack added 13 points and Jessica Rhone chipped in with 11 points and six boards off the bench.

Skidmore shot 36.7% (22-60) from the floor, while holding Fisher to its worst shooting performance of the season (27.8%) .
