Softball takes two from Cazenovia

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-The Skidmore College softball had two of its best offensive performances of the season in a sweep of Cazenovia, Tuesday afternoon at Wagner Park. The Thoroughbreds, who had 24 hits over the two games, won the first game 5-3 and took the second game 11-3.

Skidmore improves to 6-10, while Cazenovia falls to 3-7.

In the first game, Cazenovia took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a Kelsey Schuette two-run homerun, but Skidmore came back with three runs in the bottom of the second. Cassie Fishkin helped her own cause with a homer, belting a homerun to left and Abby Shea and Dani DeGregory both produced RBI singles.

After the Wildcats tied the game 3-3 in the third on an RBI single by Ali Smith, Lizette Roman-Johnston produced what proved to be the game-winning hit, driving a two-run double down the left-field line.

DeGregory and Roman-Johnston each finished 3-for-4 at the plate, while Fishkin was 2-for-4.

Amanda Carilli earned her first career win on the mound, allowing just two hits over the final three innings. Fishkin went four innings, scattering four hits and striking out a season-high six batters.

Schuette led the Cazenovia offense, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Taylor Spranger took the loss on the mound, surrendering 11 hits and five runs over six innings.

In the second game, the Thoroughbreds got on the board in the bottom of the first, as Fishkin plated Lauren Fortunato with a double and scored on Sam Skott's single in Skidmore's next at-bat.

Cazenovia battled back with a two-out rally in the top of the third, tying the game at 2-2 on a Spranger double, but Skidmore responded with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning.

DeGregory sparked the charge with a leadoff single and Fortunato, Fishkin, Foley and Lila Rosenfeld all produced RBI singles. DeGregory bookended the rally, crushing a triple to straightaway center that brought home Abby Shea and Lila Rosenfeld.

The Wildcats pulled one back in the fourth, but Forutnato extended the Skidmore lead to 10-3 with a leadoff homerun in the bottom of the inning. The Thoroughbreds recorded the mercy-rule win in the bottom of the fifth, as Jill Strileckis notched her first career RBI with a bases-loaded single through the left side.

Fortunato finished a perfect 3-for-3 for the game, also adding a stolen base. DeGregory and Fishkin were both 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored and Skott also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Fishkin secured her fifth win of the season on the mound.

Ali Smith was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Cazenovia, while Lauren Gee triples in her only at bat. Stephanie Williams took the loss for the Wildcats.

Skidmore makes the short trip to take on the Sage Colleges in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 2. The first game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
