SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-Junior guard Amy Fisher knocked down a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining in overtime to lifting Union to a 60-59 Liberty League win over the Skidmore women's basketball team, Saturday afternoon at the Williamson Center.
Ella Scheuerell gave the Thoroughbreds (14-9, 10-4 Liberty League) a five-point cushion with 1:21 remaining in overtime with a jumper, but Fisher answered back with a three on the Dutchwomen's (15-8, 9-5 Liberty League) ensuing possession. Union forced Skidmore into a shot clock violation on Skidmore's next trip down the floor, setting up Fisher's last-second heroics.
Kelly Donnelly posted her third consecutive double-double, scoring a game-high 21 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
Angela Botiba also added a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 15 boards and Scheuerell produced eight points and 12 rebounds.
Both teams struggled to hit shots in the early stages of the first half, but Skidmore got out to a 24-13 lead behind 12 points from Botiba. The Dutchwomen cut the deficit to 24-17 at the break, scoring the final four points of the half with buckets from Natalie Leone and Cailin Schmeer.
Union continued to chip away at the lead in the second half, eventually pulling in front 39-35 with a 15-3 run. Erin Lyons produced eight points and Jenni Barra drained two 3-pointers to lead the charge.
The lead change hands four times over the final 7:46 of the half before the Dutchwomen took a 50-46 lead with 46 seconds to play after a 3-pointer from Schmeer and a pair of Fisher free throws. Donnelly hit two free throws on Skidmore's next possession and recorded a steal on the ensuing inbounds. She converted on two more free throws to bring the Thoroughbreds within one with 20 seconds remaining. Schmeer restored Union's three-point lead with two free throws, before Donnelly buried a deep 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to force overtime.
Skidmore scored the first five points of the overtime period, but the Dutchwomen fought back, taking a 60-59 lead with Fisher's back-to-back threes in the final 94 seconds. Botiba had one final look at the basket in the dying seconds, but her contested layup rolled out off the back rim.
The Thoroughbreds went 23 for 66 from the field for the contest, while Union was 23 for 69, including 14 for 26 in the second half. The Dutchwomen owned a 25-0 advantage in bench scoring.
The Thoroughbreds go on the road to take on Liberty League leader St. Lawrence at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20.
