SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—The Skidmore College women's soccer scored two second-half goals to secure a vital 2-0 Liberty League win over Bard, Tuesday night at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in Liberty League play, while the Raptors go to 5-5-1 and 1-3 in the conference.
After nearly 60 scoreless minutes,
Emily Saliterman put the home side in front with her fifth tally of the season.
Emily Mendes cut into the box from the right wing and drove a low ball across the face of goal, picking out a Saliterman for the finish into the empty net.
The Thoroughbreds had a chance to put the game away with a penalty kick in the 74th minute after
Jane Huber drew a foul in the box. Bard goalkeeper Shane Crowley answered the call for the Raptors with a massive save, reaching back toward the middle of the goal to deny the shot with her trailing leg.
Skidmore continued to push forward, not allowing Bard to draw momentum from Crowley's penalty save. The Thoroughbreds were rewarded just under two minutes later, as
Courtney Shaw potted her first collegiate goal to seal the win.
Huber bent a pass behind the Raptors defensive line and Shaw muscled her way past her defender and into the 18-yard box before slotting a shot into the bottom left corner.
Bard's final chance of the game came from a corner in the 81st minute, but Skidmore cleared the ball to safety to preserve its third league shutout of the season.
The Thoroughbreds outshot the Raptors 11-5, including a 6-1 advantage in the second half and had a 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Skidmore goalkeeper
Deirdre Walsh made three saves for her fifth shutout of the season, while Crowley also finished with three saves.
Skidmore, which scored two goals for the first time in 20 games, welcomes Vassar at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10.
