WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.— Skidmore goalie
Zoe McGuire stopped a penalty stroke with 15.3 seconds to play to preserve a 2-1 win over Williams College in battle of nationally ranked field hockey teams, Tuesday night at Williamson Field.
The 10
th ranked Thoroughbreds are 7-3, while the 18
th ranked Ephs drop to 8-3. It was the ninth straight win over Williams, with the last Eph victory coming in 2006.
Gabby Hyman scored her ninth goal of the season at 15:59 to give the Thoroughbreds at 1-0 lead. Williams carried the play the rest of the half, but McGuire stopped all five shots she faced in the stanza.
Dani DeGregory shook off the Eph defense to make it 2-0 at 49:10. It was her 15
th goal of the season. Williams finally solved the tight Skidmore defense when Brigid Bruno scored at 50:58.
The Ephs were awarded a penalty stroke with 15.3 seconds to play when McGuire came out of the cage to make a huge stop on a breakaway. The play continued with
Jenn Hanks making her career-high third defensive save of the game. The ensuing scramble resulted in an Eph penalty stroke that McGuire deflected away to preserve the win.
Williams finished with a 24-8 shot and a 9-8 corner advantage.
McGuire (4-1) totaled 10 saves, while Margaret Draper had three saves for the Ephs.
Skidmore returns to Liberty League action at home Saturday at 1 p.m. against Rensselaer.
