Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College men's soccer team was knocked off by Vassar College, 2-1, in a tightly contested Liberty League match Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
 
The Thoroughbreds go to 5-4-1 (0-2 Liberty League), while the Brewers improve to 7-3-1 (1-0).
 
Reid Smith's first goal of the season gave Vassar a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the contest. Alex Gonzales delivered a cross from the right wing that found its way to behind the Skidmore defense and Smith converted on the breakaway, calmly tucking his strike inside the right post. The Brewers nearly doubled their lead two minutes later, but Gonzales's header dropped just over the crossbar.
 
The Thoroughbreds took control in the second half and came close to equalizing, as Brock Bakewell sprung Adam Beek with a ball over the top of the Vassar defense, but Beek's chip sailed high.
 
Skidmore continued to press and was rewarded in the 78th minute, as Beek connected with Bakewell on a counter attack to bring the Thoroughbreds level. Bakewell raced onto Beek's feed and muscled passed his defender before slotting a strike in off the right post.
 
Nick Hess provided the response for Vassar 2:23 later, heading home a perfectly placed Gavin Jennings free-kick, lifting the Brewers to the 2-1 win.
 
Skidmore outshot Vassar 21-12, while the Brewers had a 5-3 advantage in corners. Eli Kisselbach made one save in goal for the Thoroughbreds, while Adam Warner made four saves for Vassar.
 
Skidmore hosts Williams College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.
