Skidmore, Utica play to 2-2 draw

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College men's soccer team battled Utica to a 2-2 draw in its final non-conference game of the regular season, Tuesday evening at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds go to 6-4-2, while the Pioneers move to 4-5-3.

Skidmore dominated play in the first half, outshooting Utica 17-6, but it was the Pioneers that took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Tim Sullivan put the Thoroughbreds in front 35 seconds into the contest, as Adam Beek's shot from 12 yards caromed off the head of a Utica defender and onto Sullivan's foot, and he slotted home a strike from six yards.

Shane Ruffing netted his team-leading ninth goal of the season just over five minutes later, running onto Bita Gazashvili's through ball and sliding a shot into the bottom left corner to bring the Pioneers level.

Skidmore nearly pulled back in front in the ninth minute, as Adam Beek chased down a long pass and rolled a shot past Utica goalkeeper David Abdou, but the ball was cleared off the line by a Utica defender.

The Pioneers managed to withstand the Thoroughbreds attack and took the lead in the 25th minute. Gazashvili worked his way into the Skidmore 18-yard box and converted on his own rebound after his initial shot was blocked.

Augustine Okoye looked to have found the equalizer in the 32nd minute from a perfectly delivered corner, but his header was denied by Pioneers defender inside left post.

The two teams traded attempts at goal in the opening stages of the second half before Brock Bakewell provided the tying goal in the 64th minute from a Thoroughbreds counter attack. Todd Jensen won a tackle at midfield and fed Sullivan, who drove down the middle of the field before picking out Bakewell on the left wing. Bakewell made no mistake on the finish, tucking a shot inside the right post.

Skidmore continued to press late, but Abdo turned away two quality scoring opportunities in the final 15 minutes, denying Bakewell and Okoye to send the game to overtime.

The Pioneers went down to 10 men in the first overtime period, but the Thoroughbreds could not take advantage, managing just one shot on goal in the second overtime.

Eli Kisselbach made four saves in goal for Skidmore, while Abdo stopped nine shots. The Thoroughbreds outshot the Pioneers 33-11 and owned an 8-3 advantage in corners.

Skidmore returns to Liberty League play Saturday, Oct. 11 at Clarkson.
