Men's soccer earns vital road win over Clarkson

Box Score CANTON, N.Y. -- The Skidmore College men's team recorded its first conference win, topping Clarkson 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 7-4-2 (1-2 Liberty League), while the Golden Knights move to 6-7-1 (1-3-0 Liberty League).

Both teams came into the game needing a win to jumpstart their playoff chances. Neither would be able to score in the first half, but Skidmore broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half. The Thoroughbreds won a corner kick and leading scorer Adam Beek's cross landed at the feet of Brock Bakewell who placed it into the lower corner for his sixth goal of the year.

The two teams would trade chances throughout the half before Nick Masiero sealed the win for Skidmore in the 84th minute, collecting the ball behind the defense and chipping a strike over Clarkson's onrushing goalkeeper.

The Golden Knights pushed forward late and pulled back within one in the 87th minute, as Eric Herberger received the ball on the right side and whipped in a long cross to Alex Vozzella, who converted on a tap in. Clarkson pressed the final three minutes, but the Thoroughbreds managed to hold on for the 2-1 win.

Eli Kisselbach made three saves in goal for Skidmore, earning his sixth win of the season, while Michael King turned away six shots in goal for the Golden Knights. The Thoroughbreds outshot Clarkson 19-9, while both teams had three corners.

Skidmore travels to Hobart Friday, Oct. 17 for a 4 p.m. contest.
