Skidmore pushes past Utica in OT

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Jenn Hanks tallied 5:20 into the first overtime to push the 12th-ranked Skidmore College field hockey team to a 2-1 win against Utica College Wednesday at Wagner Park.

The Thoroughbreds, who extended their winning streak to six games, improve to 7-1 on the season, while the Pioneers go to 6-2.

Sam Skott recorded her third goal of the season and Kelly Blackhurst registered her fourth multi-point game of 2013 with two assists.

Skidmore looked the aggressor in the opening minutes of play, but Utica goalkeeper Kells Casey made two early saves on shots from Kelly Blackhurst and Dani DeGregory.

The Thoroughbreds continued to apply pressure in the first half and were rewarded in the 25th minute as Skott redirected Blackhurst's shot from the top of the circle. Blackhurst worked a give-and-go with Hanks, and then fired a shot that Skott tipped into the bottom right corner.

Colleen Dowling knotted the game at 1-1 in the 52nd minute, burying a shot from the top of the circle.  Louise Steele-Norton fed Dowling from a penalty corner and Dowling sent her shot from the top of the circle through traffic and into the bottom left corner.

Skidmore nearly found the winner late in the second half but Casey turned away Blackhurst's backhand from close range.

Becca Halter broke up a threatening move to preserve the tie and send the game to overtime after Steele-Norton led a Utica counter attack in the last minute of regulation.

The Thoroughbreds controlled the possession in the first overtime, and Jenn Hanks netted the game-winning-goal in the 75th minute with a blast from the right side of the circle. Blackhurst threaded a pass to Hanks after a penalty corner and Hanks ripped a shot inside the left post.

Skidmore held an 18-3 edge in penalty corners and outshot Utica 22-4, including a 4-0 advantage in overtime. In goal, Haley McDougall collected her seventh win of the season for the Thoroughbreds.

Skidmore travels to St. Lawrence for a Liberty League contest Saturday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m.
