SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- The Skidmore College men's soccer team battled to its third straight win in a 1-0 victory against SUNY Potsdam Friday at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 3-2 with the win, while Potsdam goes to 4-2.
In the opening minutes of play, neither team could gain an advantage as they both fought to gain control of the ball on the rain-soaked pitch. Freshman Adebare Oyeniyi's first career goal put the Thoroughbreds ahead in the 19th minute as his strike from 25 yards out dipped into the top right corner. Potsdam increased the pressure following the Skidmore goal, but Eduardo Figueroa's shot from 20 yards out was easily handled by freshman goalkeeper Derrick Yam.
Both teams continued to fight for possession early in the second half. Skidmore nearly doubled its lead in the 59th minute as Nick Martinelli's corner found Oyeniyi unmarked in front of goal, but his header did not have enough power to beat the Bears goalkeeper. Potsdam looked to push the tempo in the game's final 10 minutes, but it could not find a way past the Skidmore defense.
Skidmore held a 13-10 edge in shots and a 6-4 advantage in corners. Yam made 3 saves in the shutout for his first career win.
Skidmore returns to action Saturday, Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. as it hosts SUNY New Paltz.
