Thoroughbreds open season in RWU Classic

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.--The Skidmore College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 setback against Salve Regina in the opening game of the 2013 season at the Roger Williams University Squad Locker Classic.

After a scoreless first half, the Thoroughbreds controlled the action early in the second half. However, they could not capitalize on two early shots, and the Seahawks managed to push ahead as Jacob Pate set up Jake Weinshank for the game's first goal.

In the 70th minute Skidmore was awarded a corner on a shot from Adam Beek. On the ensuing play, Beek connected with sophomore Andrew Pertsov who brought Thoroughbreds level.

With the game even at 1-1, both teams continued to look for the winner, and in the 79th minute the Seahawks broke the tie as Alex Wasilewski capitalized on a rebound from a blocked shot. The Thoroughbreds pressed hard, but Beek's strike in the final minute sailed wide.

The Seahawks owned a 15-9 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corners. Eli Kisselbach made seven saves in goal for Skidmore.

The Thoroughbreds return to action Sept. 1 at 1:30 p.m. against the host Roger Williams University Hawks.
