#12 Skidmore downs Geneseo, 5-4, in overtime thriller

Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- Kelly Blackhurst tallied her team-best 13th goal of the season 11:26 into overtime as the Skidmore College field hockey team edged Geneseo, 5-4, Saturday at Wagner Park.

The 12th-ranked Thoroughbreds improve to 9-2, while the Knights go to 6-4.

Dani DeGregory produced five points with two goals and an assist and Sam Skott and Pauline Searles each added a goal for the Thoroughbreds. In goal, Haley McDougall made 10 saves for her ninth win of the season.

Skidmore jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the back-and-forth game with goals from DeGregory and Skott coming 44 seconds apart. DeGregory got the Thoroughbreds on the board 21 seconds into play, dribbling into the circle and tucking in a backhand and Skott banged a feed from Blackhurst inside the left post for her fourth goal of the year.

Geneseo cut the Skidmore lead in half in the 16th minute as Malinak picked up a loose ball and picked the bottom left corner with a shot from inside the circle. Searles restored the Thoroughbreds two goal lead in the 32nd minute, burying a rebound from close range after a blocked shot.

Malinak once again reduced the Knights deficit in the 59th minute. DeAngelis dribbled into the circle and eluded a sliding McDougall before picking out Malinak for the tap in. DeGregory responded for Skidmore 39 seconds later, ripping home a backhand.

Geneseo brought the game level late in the second half with two unanswered goals from DeAngelis and Doherty. DeAngelis scored her team-leading 9th goal of the season off a scramble in front and Doherty tied the game at 4-4, tipping in a long-range shot from Bridget McGovern off a penalty corner.

The Knights had two early chances in overtime, but McDougall denied blasts from McGovern off back-to-back penalty corners. The Thoroughbreds withstood the early pressure and Blackhurst found the game-winner in the 81st minute.

DeGregory broke through the Geneseo defense on a counter attack and picked out Blackhurst, who rang a shot off the left post. DeGregory scooped up the rebound and found Blackhurst again for the tap in.

Skidmore outshot Geneseo 21-19 and penalty corners were even at 11-11.

The Thoroughbreds travel to Vassar College Oct. 11 for a 4 p.m. contest.
