Brock Bakewell's header 9:06 into overtime gave Skidmore College men's soccer a 1-0 win against Hobart in its final home game of the regular season, Saturday at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 10-4-2 (4-1-1 Liberty) while the Statesmen go to 7-7-1 (1-4-1 Liberty).
Hobart had the better of the first half, nearly pulling ahead in the sixth minute as Marco Ronning crashed a strike from 12 yards against the bar. Skidmore goalkeeper
Eli Kisselbach denied the Statesmen of another scoring opportunity in the 25th minute, quickly coming off his line to punch away a corner.
The Thoroughbreds responded in the second half, generating their best scoring chances on a pair of corners.Â
Alex Hodor-Lee delivered a ball that bounced through the six-yard box untouched in the 53rd minute, and Bakewell guided a header just over the crossbar on a ball from
Adam Beek in the 64th minute.
Hobart threatened again midway through the second half, but Kisselbach made a diving save to push a shot from Ronning around the near post.
After neither time could find the winner in regulation, the two teams traded scoring opportunities in the first overtime period. Statesmen goalkeeper Mike Lucas turned away a blast from Nick Maserio and Kisselbach kept the game level with a diving save of his own on a strike from Tyler Terens.
Bakewell netted his tenth goal of the season with a glancing header on a perfectly placed cross from
Nick Martinelli in the 99th minute.
Skidmore outshot Hobart 13-12 and corners were even at 4-4. Kisselbach made five saves in his second-straight shutout, while Lucas stopped six shots in goal for the Statesmen.
The Thoroughbreds travel to St. Lawrence Saturday, Oct. 26 for a 3 p.m. contest.
