Thoroughbreds remain in playoff hunt with 2-0 win at Bard

Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. –  The Skidmore College women's soccer team completed the weekend Liberty League sweep with a 2-0 road win over Bard College, Sunday afternoon.
 
Skidmore improved to 3-7-1 overall, 2-2-1 in the Liberty League.  The Thoroughbreds beat Vassar 1-0 on Saturday.
 
Bard (4-9-1, 0-4-1 Liberty) had early chances. . The best opportunity came in the 24th minute, when freshman Gina Lewis  hit a cross off a corner kick on a full volley from the top of the box. Skidmore keeper Gab Lawrence (Yorktown, NY) literally got one finger on the lofted shot, enough to tip it just onto the top of the crossbar.
 
Late in the first half. Skidmore senior Rebecca Russo (Belmont, MA) sent a cross into the box that  senior Sarah LaBella (Malta, NY) collected after the ensuing scramble and then scored her first goal of the year in the 42nd minute to give Skidmore a 1-0 lead at halftime.
 
The game was played more evenly in the second half, and sophomore Morgan Governale (Setauket, NY) scored Skidmore's second goal from close range after another failed clear in the Bard box. Bard finished with an edge in shots (10-8) and corners (6-5).
 
Lawrence finished with five saves for the Thoroughbreds, who are off until Oct. 16, when they'll travel to take on Middlebury College in a non-league game at 3:30 p.m.
