Box Score Geneva, N.Y. - In a battle of nationally-ranked teams, #15 William Smith prevailed with a 3-1 win over #4 Skidmore in Saturday's Liberty League field hockey matchup at McCooey Field.
The Thoroughbreds fall to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in league play, while the Herons improve to 10-1 and remain unbeaten in league play at 4-0.
William Smith got on the board first as Margaret McConnell tallied her sixth of the season on a penalty corner just 2:55 in. Morgan Atanasio and Annie Kietzman assisted on the goal. Just under four minutes later, Skidmore responded as
Kelly Blackhurst blasted a shot from the top on a penalty corner to tie it up. It was her 19th of the season as
Hilary Cranston and
Annie Weis were credited with the assists.
McConell gave the Herons the lead back at 22:31 when she corralled a loose ball and found the back of the cage for her second of the afternoon.
After holding a 2-1 lead at half, Julia Simmons capped the scoring as she took a pass from Kietzman and scored her fourth of the season to make it 3-1. Skidmore put pressure on late, but was unable to convert as William Smith remained perfect in league play.
Haley McDougall finished with four saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Catherine Hare made eight stops for the Herons.
Skidmore outshot William Smith 18-12 and held a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners.
The Thoroughbreds return to action on Wednesday at Utica.
