Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 non-conference win over New Paltz in Tuesday night's home opener at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 2-1, while the Hawks fall to 1-2.
Senior
Diego Reinero scored the game's lone goal in the 35
th minute after taking a crossing pass from the left wing from
Brock Bakewell. Reinero corralled the ball and beat New Paltz keeper Conor Power in the lower left corner for his first goal of the season.
The best opportunity for the Hawks came in the 5
th minute when Shanshe Khosroshvili got behind the defense and was alone on goal, but
Nick Peterson came out of the goal to make the save and prevent Skidmore from falling behind early.
New Paltz had another chance late when Robert Wexler's free kick found its way through the box and went just wide of the goal as the Thoroughbreds were able to hold on for the 1-0 victory.
Both teams played physical throughout, combining for 42 fouls. Each team finished with six shots on goal, while Skidmore held a 7-1 advantage in corners.
Peterson made six saves for his second shutout of the season, while Power made five stops on six shots.
The Thoroughbreds return to action on September 10, when they face Dickinson in the Red Devil Classic.
