Elena Stansky's first goal of the season and key saves down the stretch by keeper
Meghan Sleezer carried the Skidmore College women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Farmingdale State in Saturday's first round of the Skidmore Invitational Tournament at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 2-1, while Rams suffer their first loss of the season to go to 4-1.
In predetermined pairings, Skidmore will play Westfield State on Sunday at 2 p.m., while Farmingdale takes on Husson College at 11:30 a.m.
The lone goal came at 20:26.
Kelsey Yam fired a shot that appeared headed for the back of the net, when a Farmingdale defender managed to block the shot on the line. The rebound went straight out to Stansky who buried the shot.
Both teams traded chances in the second half, but it was Sleezer who kept the Rams off the board with a pair of key late saves. She made a one-on-one save deep in the box with just under 17 minutes to play in the second half and then stuffed Corine Magee, who was all alone in front, with 2:30 to play in the game.
Sleezer finished with 10 saves, including six in the second half. Farmingdale keeper Amanda Maass had four saves.
The Thoroughbreds held a slight 14-13 shot advantage, while the Rams had a 6-3 corner kick advantage.
