10th-ranked Thoroughbreds shut out #13 Middlebury, 3-0

Box Score

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team scored two early goals and held off Middlebury to earn a 3-0 non-conference win, Thursday afternoon on a rain-drenched Thoroughbred Field.
The 10th-ranked Thoroughbreds won their sixth straight to improve to 7-1, while the 13th-ranked Panthers fall to 2-3 overall.
Senior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) got Skidmore started after Brittany O'Brien (Ridgefield, Conn.) beat her defender around the wing and fed off to Kemp who continued along the wing and beat the keeper far post at the 1:15 mark. Less than a minute later, O'Brien picked up her second assist of the game as she set up Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) for a one-timer in the circle, giving the Thoroughbreds a 2-0 advantage.
Rosencrans picked up her second goal of the game at the 22:19 mark when Katie Potter (Rumson, N.J.) sent a pass in from outside the circle that Rosencrans gathered and beat Middlebury keeper Madeiline Brooks for her sixth goal of the season and a 3-0 lead.
Middlebury tried to get on the board late in the first half, but Skidmore goalie Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass.) broke up a crossing pass on a 2-on-0 breakaway to keep the Panthers scoreless.
The Thoroughbreds controlled possession throughout most of the second, holding a 7-3 shot advantage and drawing nine penalty corners to Middlebury's two as neither team was able to score and the Thoroughbreds earned a 3-0 victory.
Catinella finished with seven saves to earn the shutout for Skidmore, while Brooks also made seven saves in the loss.
“Today's game was a true team effort.  The Thoroughbreds had a very fast start that ignited their play with energy and confidence” said Skidmore coach Beth Hallenbeck.  “The first half was an offensive show and in the second half the team exhibited solid defense.  Brittany O'Brien, Katie Potter and Annie Rosencrans were terrific up front, Jackie Slocombe and Jess Dankner were defensive walls, but the game belonged to goalkeeper Liz Catinella.  She was dominant in the defensive circle earning the shut out win.”
The Thoroughbreds travel to Utica College on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
