Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College women's soccer team opened Liberty League play with a 1-1 overtime tie against sixth ranked William Smith College, Friday at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds are 3-2-2, while the Herons are 6-1-1.
The first half saw a majority of the play in the midfield, with neither team mounting a serious threat.
Play opened up a bit in the second half. Skidmore scored first when
Elena Stansky drilled home a rebound of a
Dana Brill shot from one-yard out at 47:46. The Herons tied it when Whitney Frary converted a penalty kick after a Thoroughbred hand ball at 77:14.
Both teams had chances toward the end of regulation, but neither team could connect. The overtime went the same way with each team managing a lone shot on goal.
Skidmore senior back
Lindsay Schmitt had a big game, shutting down several William Smith opportunities in the second half and overtime.
Thoroughbred keeper
Meghan Sleezer had five saves, while William Smith's Amanda Davis stopped six shots. The Herons had a slight 15-13 shot advantage.
Skidmore will host Hamilton College on Saturday at 2 p.m., while William Smith travels to Union College.
