GENEVA, N.Y.—The No. 21 Hobart College soccer team played 110 minutes to a 1-1 tie with visiting Skidmore College to open Liberty League play at Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Statesmen are 4-1-2 overall, 0-0-1 in the league and the Thoroughbreds are now 3-3-2 and 0-0-1 in league play.

The first half saw all the scoring. Skidmore had the first opportunity with a penalty kick in the 11th minute, but the shot by senior Doug Yeates went wide left of the goal. Hobart capitalized on a penalty kick of its own 15 minutes, 5 seconds into the game. Junior Lukas Petersen scored to put Hobart up 1-0.

Just 16 seconds later, Hobart junior goalie Charlie Hale  was red carded and forced to leave the game. He recorded one save in 15:21 of play. Sophomore Stephen Bruening came in to face the Thoroughbreds' second penalty kick opportunity. This time junior Diego Reinero fired a shot into the back of the net to tie up the game. It was his fifth goal of the season.

With 2:38 left in the opening half, Skidmore had a chance to score, but a shot by Reinero was saved by a Hobart defender. In the 78th minute the Statesmen had a chance to take back the lead. Senior Justin Dotzman (Council Rock South/Holland, Pa.) threw the ball in for Hobart. There was a crowd in front of the net, but Dotzman regained the ball and drilled a shot that went just wide of the left post.

In the first overtime period, both teams recorded two shots that sailed high of the goal. Senior Matt Kelsey fired both shots for Skidmore. Junior Evan Grey sent a shot just high of the net right at the buzzer.

In the second overtime period, senior Kevin McCarthy received a crossing pass from sophomore Will Abbott and fired a shot that was saved by Skidmore junior goalie, Nick Peterson. In the 107th Yeates sent a shot wide of the goal, and in the final minute Kelsey fired a desperation shot that went left of the goal.

Bruening played 94:39 in goal for the Statesmen and finished with three saves. Hobart held a 19-11 advantage in shots, and recorded a 7-6 edge in corners.
