Skidmore women fall 57-50 to Oneonta

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College women's basketball team lost 57-50 to SUNY Oneonta in the first round of the 33rd Annual Skidmore Invitational, Friday night at Williamson Sports Center.

SUNY Cortland posted a 67-56 win over St. John Fisher in the other first round game.

The 1-1 Thoroughbreds will play Cortland(2-0) at 4 p.m. in a predetermined match-up. St. John Fisher (0-1) and Oneonta (1-0) will play at 2 p.m.

Skidmore struggled from the floor against the Red Dragons, hitting 13 of 66 attempts for 19.7 percent. Solid defense kept the Thoroughbreds in the game with 18 points coming off 22 Oneonta turnovers.

Trailing all but the game's first two minutes, Skidmore battled back to tie it 45-45 on a Christine Gargiso field goal with 6:07 to play. Oneonta went on a 6-0 run on a pair of baskets by Mary Kate O'Connell and a single field goal by Gabi Regan to open a 51-45 lead with 2:59 to play. The Thoroughbreds were unable to get closer than four the rest of the way.

Megan Gaugler led Skidmore in scoring with 12 points, all from beyond the arc. She also had three assists, two blocks and five steals. Cyrida Felton added nine points and Jessie Kavana contributed eight points three assists off the bench.

Samantha Szkotak had a double/double for the Red Dragons with 14 points and 10 rebounds. O'Connell and Madison Slagle scored 10 each for Oneonta.

Cortland used a balanced offense to knock off St. John Fisher. Brittany Cohen led four Red Dragon players in double figures with 13 points. She also had five assists and three steals. Molly Byrne had 12 points and five assists, Micki Volpini scored 10 points, and Jen Polan added 12 points off the bench.

Colleen Maloney led Fisher with a game-high 20 points to go along with seven rebounds, three blocks, three assists.
