Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College men's soccer team earned a 4-2 victory over Southern Vermont behind the strength of three first half goals, Tuesday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds improve to 5-4-2, while the Mountaineers fall to 4-7.
Sophomore
Joe Phelan (Goshen, Conn.) put Skidmore up 1-0 in the 22
nd minute when he corralled the rebound of
Alex Amini's (Brooklyn, N.Y.) shot and found the back of the net. The Thoroughbreds made it 2-0 when
Matt Kelsey (Cambridge, Mass.) put back a rebound off a shot from
Orion Johnson (New York, N.Y.) at the 35:55 mark.
Southern Vermont cut the lead to 2-1 in the 41
st minute when Nick Haggerty beat Skidmore keeper
Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) on a breakaway. Cohen Bond picked up the assist on the Mountaineer goal.
Kelsey pushed the lead back to two goals when he took a feed from
Diego Reinero (Princeton, N.J.), got behind the defenders and beat Southern Vermont's Aaron Eschler with one second remaining in the first half for his second goal of the game.
The Mountaineers again cut the lead to one when Ben Naaktgeboren scored on a deflection off a restart at the 54:10 mark. The Thoroughbreds came back as
Doug Yeates (Richmond, Vt.) tallied the game's final goal at the 68:12 mark for a 4-2 advantage. Yeates took a cross from Reinero in the box and deflected it in for his first goal of the season.
Peterson picked up the win, making one stop in the first half.
Steve Vasquez (Central Falls, R.I.) came on in relief, playing the final 45 minutes for Skidmore. Eschler finished with 13 saves in the loss for Southern Vermont.
The Thoroughbreds held a commanding 38-4 advantage in shots.
Skidmore returns to Liberty League action on Friday at St. Lawrence.
