Saratoga Springs, N.Y.— Rensselaer scored three straight second half goals and then held Skidmore off for a 3-2 Liberty League men's soccer win Sunday afternoon at Wachenheim Field.
The loss drops the Thoroughbreds to 7-7-4, 1-3-2. The Engineers clinch a Liberty League playoff bid with 3-1-2 league and 8-4-3 overall record.
Skidmore scored first at 9:19 when
Doug Yeates drew two defenders and then passed to a wide open
Aaron Krepack who drilled home his third goal of the season from the left top of the box.
RPI had a chance to tie it late in the first half when Adam Updegrove's shot from in front was deflected over the cross bar by Thoroughbred keeper
Nick Peterson to keep it 1-0 at the half.
The Engineers opened the second half with an early goal to tie it 1-1. Alex Dotseth headed Benjamin Poser's corner into the net at 48:08 for his first collegiate goal. RPI took the lead at 57:03 when Poser lobbed a ball over the Skidmore defense to Ryan Gracy who headed the ball past Peterson for his first collegiate goal. Poser earned his third assist of the day when set-up Jake Tonkel at 64:54 for a 3-1 RPI lead.
Skidmore battled back when Gildas Giriman cut the lead to one, 3-2, when he scored on a rebound at 69:20. Giriman nearly tied it with 2:59 left when he got through on a breakaway, but RPI goalie Alex Penny made the initial save and corralled the rebound to end the threat.
The Engineers held a slight edge in shots, 13-10 and corners, 4-3. Peterson finished with four saves for the Thoroughbreds, while Penny had three saves for RPI.
Skidmore will close out the season at home on Oct. 30 at 2:30 p.m. against Union, while the Engineers are at New Paltz on Oct. 27.
