Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College men's soccer team used a quick pair of second half goals to beat Lasell College 2-0 Friday night in the first round of the Skidmore Alumni Soccer Tournament.
It was the season opener for both teams. Skidmore will play Wells College on Sunday at 12 p.m. for the championship, while Lasell and Wells play Saturday at 2 p.m. in the three-team tournament.
After a scoreless first half, Matt Wolff (Minneapolis, Minn.) collected a mishandled shot by Diego Reinero (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) to give the Thoroughbreds at 1-0 lead at 47:35. Matt Kelsey (Cambridge, Mass.) made it 2-0 less than four minutes later when he converted a defensive save for his first goal of the season.
Skidmore outshot Lasell 13-6, including 9-3 in the second half. Thoroughbred goalie Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) had three saves, while Laser keeper Matthew Bruninghaus stopped five shots.
Skidmore defender Greg Lloyd (Allendale, N.J.) helped preserve the shutout with a big defensive save in the first half when he blocked a shot by Kyle Cronin at the 21 minute mark.
