Skidmore women extend unbeaten streak to 7 with 2-1 win

Box Score

Canton, N.Y.-- Senior midfielder Emily Quirk banked a shot off the post and into the net for the game-winning goal with just 2:46 to play in regulation time as Skidmore College came away with a 2-1 win over St. Lawrence University in the 2009 women's soccer Liberty League opener for both teams at SLU's Sandy MacAllaster Field Friday afternoon.

Skidmore, 6-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the Liberty League extended its unbeaten streak to seven games while snapping SLU's seven game streak and dropping the Saints to 5-2-2 overall and 0-1-0 in league play.

Quirk's goal, her second of the year, came on the Thoroughbred's only good scoring opportunity in the second half and was a quick strike after Saint pressure in the Skidmore end. Senior forward Jenni Hibbard sent Quirk a quick pass from the top of the 18-yard box and Quirk gunned a hard shot which glanced off the inside of the post and caromed into the far corner of the net for the game winner at 87:14.

Skidmore took a 1-0 lead 40:22 into play as Abby Benton scored on a rebound after a free kick by Lindsay Schmitt. The Saints came back to tie it 11:59 into the second half as Stephanie Sayward collected a free ball in right in front of the cage after a blocked shot and put it past Skidmore goalie Meghan Sleezer for her fourth of the year.

Sleezer finished with six saves for Skidmore while Abby van Geldern had four for the Saints.
