Skidmore drops league opener to St. Lawrence, 2-1

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. - The Skidmore College men's soccer team fell to St. Lawrence 2-1 in Friday's Liberty League action at Wachenheim Field.

Skidmore falls to 3-4 on the season and St. Lawrence improves to 6-1. It was the league opener for both teams.

The Saints got out to an early lead behind two first half goals from Brendan Gorman. Gorman beat Thoroughbred keeper Nick Peterson with a header off a crossing pass from James Stewart at the 24:06 mark for a 1-0 lead. Gorman would add his second goal when he took a pass from Stewart, got past the defender and beat the goalie in the top upper corner at the 38:38 mark.

The Thoroughbreds fought back and brought it within one when Nick Conquino's (Rochester, N.Y.) crossing pass set up junior Doug Yeates (Richmond, Vt.) for his fourth goal of the season.

Skidmore controlled the ball for most of the second half, but could not generate many good chances to tie it up.

The Thoroughbreds outshot the Saints 12-11. Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) made three saves for Skidmore and Brian Abernethy made four for St. Lawrence.

Skidmore will host Clarkson in Liberty League action at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
