Women’s soccer upsets #5 Amherst 1-0

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to six with a 1-0 victory over #5 Amherst College Sunday at Wachenheim Field.

Skidmore improves to 5-1-1 on the season and Amherst falls to 2-1.

The Thoroughbreds got the scoring started early when Emily Quirk's (Maplewood, N.J.) crossing pass got through the Lord Jeff defense and freshman Rebecca Russo (Belmont, Mass.) collected the ball in the air and put it past Amherst keeper Allie Horwitz at the 4:20 mark. It was Russo's first collegiate goal.

The Skidmore defense did not allow the Lord Jeffs many quality chances throughout the game. The biggest Amherst threat came early in the second half when junior back Lindsay Schmitt (Mendon, Mass.) came up with a big when she blocked Jackie Hirsch's header off of a direct kick to keep the Lord Jeffs off the scoreboard.

Thoroughbred goalie Megan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) was tough in net with seven saves, including a diving save with less than 15 minutes left for her fourth shutout of the season. Allie Horwitz made six saves for Amherst.

The Thoroughbreds open up Liberty League play on September 25, when they travel to St. Lawrence.
