Field Hockey crushes Union 6-1

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, NY – The Skidmore College field hockey team opened Liberty League play with an impressive 6-1 win at Union College at Frank Bailey Field on Saturday afternoon.  The Thoroughbreds improve to 4-1 (1-0 Liberty) , while the Dutchwomen go to 2-3 (0-1).

The Thoroughbreds had four scores by four different players in the first half.  Elise Britt's miraculous return to the field was a psychological boost for the team, and she opened the scoring on an assist from Claire Superak on a corner play.  Brittany O'Brien scored off a feed from Annie Rosencrans, Katie Potter scored on a rebound off the pads, and Carolyne McManama found the back of the net off a pass from Christine Kemp

The Thoroughbreds continued the brilliant play in the second half.  Britt, playing with a casted wrist, scored her second goal on an assist from Kemp, and Lauren McCarthy scored unassisted

Britt struck first at 11:04 of the first, opening the door for five straight Skidmore goals. McCarthy capped the scoring with 1:32 remaining in the game.

"It was a true team effort, with everyone seeing time on the field and contributing to the win." said Skidmore coach Beth Hallenbeck.  "The defense was anchored by Claire Superak ,Casey Tang and Julia Sarni.  Along with goalkeepers Liz Catinella and Margaux Hoagland, the Thoroughbred defense was impressive, turning back several quality chances by the Union offense.

"Skilled tackles, interceptions and defensive tenacity were the keys to shutting down a talented Union attack.  Lauren McCarthy's constant presence in the midfield stabilized the team.  Her stealthy tackles, smooth ball carrying and distribution allowed us to control the center of the field.  Christine Kemp was stellar up front, breaking free at top speed and carrying the ball up the field numerous times."

Union goalkeeper Sarah Rios made five saves in the game, while Skidmore's Liz Catinella made five.

The Thoroughbreds host Oneonta on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
