Men's soccer loses final at Union

SCHENECTADY, NY – In a must-win game for a Liberty League playoff berth, the Union College men's soccer team (10-5-2, 4-3-0 LL) delivered with a 4-1 victory against Skidmore (7-9-0, 2-5-0 LL) on Saturday at College Park.

Ryan Banagan (Albany, NY/Bethlehem Central) got the scoring started at 15:55 when sophomore midfielder Teddy Steen (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) found Banagan alone in the box for his six goal of the season.

The eventual game-winner came off the foot of freshman forward Sahr Nyuma (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) thanks to a great individual effort by junior midfielder Keite Minakawa (Hillsdale, NJ/Dwight Englewood) to setup the play at 40:25.

Freshman forward Sebastian Jansen (Cape Town, RSA) made it 3-0 at 47:38 and senior defender Brendan Steiner (Madison, CT) converted a penalty kick to make it 4-0 at 84:58.

The Thoroughbreds didn't go away with a late surge, which resulted in a goal from junior midfielder Doug Yeates (Richmond, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) at 85:49. The goal was his team-leading ninth and came after a failed clear attempt inside the box.

Sophomore forward Adam Margulies (Newtown, CT) made his return from injury, making four saves for his eighth win of the year. At the other end, sophomore Nick Peterson (West Harford, CT/Hall) made four saves in just over 60 minutes of action and senior goaltender Chris Ford (Ann Arbor, MI/Greenhills) made two stops.
