Thoroughbreds clinch Liberty League title in 5-1 victory over Utica

Box Score

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team clinched the Liberty League regular-season championship with Saturday's 5-1 win over Utica College at Thoroughbred Field.

The 11th-ranked Thoroughbreds improve to 14-3 while the Pioneers fall to 8-9.

Senior Elise Britt (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) scored three goals and had an assist to lead Skidmore offensively. Britt got the scoring started early when she scored off of Brittany O'Brien's (Ridgefield, Conn.) rebound just 23 second into the game. Junior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) made it a 2-0 game when she beat Utica keeper Monica Storms off of Britt's rebound at the 18:39 mark. Britt tallied her second goal when she scored off of her own rebound at the 30:12 mark to give the Thoroughbreds a 3-0 first half advantage.

Britt continued to play aggressive and scored her third goal of the game and 17th of the season when she put in the rebound off Casey Tang's (Columbia, Md.) shot less than five minutes into the second half.

Utica would make it 4-1 when Hayley Coon took a centering pass from Sarah Keller and beat Skidmore goalie Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass.) at the 44:08 mark.

The Thoroughbreds would add another goal when O'Brien collected a loose ball in front of the net and scored off a corner with no time remaining for her 12th goal of the season.

Skidmore outshot the Pioneers 24-5. Catinella made three saves for the Thoroughbreds and Storms stopped 13 shots for Utica.

“The Thoroughbreds were focused and ready for the Utica game” said Skidmore coach Beth Hallenbeck.  “Casey Tang, Jackie Slocombe and Jess Dankner all had solid performances for Skidmore.  Elise Britt was in a league of her own; her hustle, intensity and skill were evident from start to finish, and she led the team to victory.”

With the seven points in the game for Britt, she now has 103 for her career, making her just the 10th player in Skidmore history to surpass the 100-point mark.

The Thoroughbreds were able to clinch after beating Utica and having the best record against common opponents of St. Lawrence and Hamilton. Hamilton will host St. Lawrence in the first round of the Liberty League playoffs.

Skidmore will host the fourth-seed Union College, Wednesday, November 4 at 2 p.m. in the opening round of the Liberty League playoffs.
