Women's soccer clinches home playoff game with 0-0 tie at William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y.—The 12th-ranked William Smith College soccer team and Liberty League rival Skidmore played to a scoreless double-overtime tie this afternoon on Cozzens Field. The Herons move to 9-3-2 overall and 4-0-2 in the conference, while the Thoroughbreds are now 11-2-2 on the season and 5-0-1 in the Liberty League.

The tie clinches a home playoff game for Skidmore. A Thoroughbred win on Sunday at Hamilton would give the team the Liberty regular season title.

In a back-and-forth match, both teams had chances to score. Skidmore's best opportunity came after a corner kick in the 19th minute. Lindsay Schmitt ripped a shot that appeared to be headed just inside the right post, but William Smith senior Katelyn Tyson was there to make the team save.

William Smith had back-to-back chances in the second half, with two consecutive corner kicks by Whitney Frary. The first was a hard shot from Tyson that had Skidmore goalie Meghan Sleezer beat, but it was stopped by defender Catherine Kapustynski. The second attempt was a direct header by BreLynn Nasypany from close range, but that too was stopped by a team save.

The Herons had two more great opportunities late in the game. In the 84th minute, sophomore Alyse DiCenzo headed another Frary corner kick into the crossbar, narrowly missing. And, in the 105th minute of action, Nasypany took another shot that was saved by Sleezer.

Both teams took nine shots, while William Smith held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.

Heron goalie Amanda Davis made two saves, while Sleezer finished with two stops for the Thoroughbreds.
