Vassar women upset Skidmore 1-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 28, 2008) – Sophomore Carolyn Demougeot headed home a corner kick off the foot of Allison McManis to lift the Vassar College women's soccer team to a upset of No. 22 Skidmore College, Saturday at Weinberg Field. On an evening in which slippery conditions made it difficult to finish shots, Demougeot's score marked Vassar's only shot on goal of the game.

With the win, the Brewers move back to .500, at 4-4-0, and record their first Liberty League win to even their league record at 1-1-0. The loss marks just the second of the season for the Thoroughbreds, who fall to 7-2-1, 1-1-0.

Demougeot netted the game-winner in the 72nd minute off one of McManis's (Oakland, CA/Bishop O'Dowd) perfectly placed corner kicks.

Brewer keeper Anne Hutchinson (St. Pete Beach, FL/Tampa Preparatory) played a strong game in goal, coming up with five saves to earn the win. Just over three minutes into the game, a pass rolled through the Vassar defense and Thoroughbred freshman Abby Benton (Vergennes, VT/Vergennes Union) came streaking after it, but Hutchinson charged out of the goal to make the tough stop. Later in the half, Skidmore freshman Lauren Madden (Huntingon, NY/St. Anthony's) got free from the Vassar defense for a one-on-one with Hutchinson, but the Brewer goalie came out to make a diving stop.

Thoroughbred goalie Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) had no saves in goal. However, the stat is misleading, as the wet conditions required Sleezer to make some tough plays in the box.

Vassar had seven shots, one on goal, while the Thoroughbreds managed 15 shots with five on goal. Schmitt led Skidmore with five shots and Benton chipped in with four. The Thoroughbreds took nine corner kicks to Vassar's five.
