Late goal leads Skidmore to 1-0 win

Box Score

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – A second-half goal by senior Pat Phelan (Wallingford, Conn.) lifted the Skidmore College men's soccer team past Manhattanville College, 1-0, Wednesday night in non-conference action at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds outshot the Valiants 11-9 in the contest and improve to 3-2-2.  The Valiants fall to 3-2-1.

Phelan's team-leading third goal of the year came at 67:01 when sophomore Phil Cassidy (Altamont, N.Y.) sent a ball from 30 yards out that found Phelan in front of the net for a perfect header that proved to be the game's only score.

A tenacious Skidmore defense held the visitors to just two shots on goal during the contest, with rookie keeper Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) finishing with two saves for his second straight shutout.

Valiant keeper Jerry Tellier (West Warwick, R.I.) recorded three saves in the loss.

The Thoroughbreds will be on the road on Sept. 20 when they face Rochester Institute of Technology.
