Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College women's soccer team scored two goals in the final seven minutes of play to take a 2-0 non-conference win over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in its season opener Friday at Wachenheim Field.
Senior forward
Rachael Sushner (Potomac, Md.) broke a 0-0 tie when she hit the top shelf of the net off of a cross by sophomore
Lindsay Schmitt(Mendon, Mass.) at 83:13.
Freshman
Lauren Madden scored her first collegiate goal off passes from Schmitt and
Emily Quirk(Maplewood, N.J.) to put the Thoroughbreds up 2-0 with 2:11 left in regulation.
MCLA (0-1) threatened in the first half when a shot by sophomore Jessica Tietgens (Stamford, Vt.) from the right side of the box was blocked by Skidmore freshman keeper
Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.).
Sleezer finished with three saves in 57:00 of play, and combined with fellow freshman
Ellie Shorey(Cleveland Heights, Ohio) for the shutout.
Trailblazer rookie goalie Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, N.Y.) finished with 12 saves, including eight in the first half.
Skidmore (1-0) continues action Saturday when they host Cortland at 3 p.m.
