Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The Skidmore College field hockey team is the Liberty League field hockey champion after an exciting 1-0 win over St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at St. Lawrence's North Country Field.
Sophomore
Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) was named MVP of the tournament after recording two goals and an assist during the two contests. With the win, the Thoroughbreds (15-3) move on to the Division III NCAA Tournament. The NCAA tournament bracket will be official early Monday morning. The Saints end their season at 12-6.
Kemp extended her scoring streak to eight games when she scored the only tally of the game at 29:23 in the first half. After a fight for a loose ball, sophomore
Carolyne McManama (Medfield, Mass.) crossed a ball from the left side of the circle through several Saints defenders and found Kemp open in the middle for the score.
"I was pleased with our ability to sustain that level of intensity and quality play throughout the entire game,' said head coach
Beth Hallenbeck.
The top-seeded Saints would not go down without a fight, as they posted an 8-3 shot advantage and an 8-3 lead in corners in the second half. The Saints, however, could not solve sophomore goalie
Liz Catinella (Sudbury, Mass.), who ended the game with two saves and the 11
th team shutout of the season on her way to receiving all-tournament team honors.
"Today's championship is a result of Intensity, skill, speed, and tenacity from the entire team," said Hallenbeck.
St. Lawrence's Joss-Elyse Smith (Chestertown, N.Y.), Brooke Maloney (Old Greenwich, N.Y), Emily Riley (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Jennifer Stetson (Bristol, Vt.) all received all-tournament team honors as well.
