Canton, N.Y,--The Skidmore College men's soccer team had its playoff hopes erased in a 3-2 loss at St. Lawrence University on Sunday. St. Lawrence improved to 10-6-1 overall and a 4-2-1 conference record, while Skidmore fell to 10-6-2 and a 3-4-0 conference mark.
Scoring for the Saints were senior co-captain and midfielder Paul LaMarca (Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain), who tallied two goals, including the game winner, as well as first year forward Sean Scott (Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep CDS).
Skidmore's Pat Phelan scored an unassisted goal, as Saints' keeper and co-captain Emilio Coletta (Montreal, QC/Marianapolis College) went to make the save but was unable to secure the ball as it slipped into the goal to even things up just before the 50th minute.
Phelan found himself with a red card in the 77th minute, forcing the Thoroughbreds to play a man down for the final 13 minutes of the game. That didn't stop the visiting team from threatening the Saints' lead as Thoroughbred Ernie Economides sent a direct cross from the left to teammate Don von Allmen, who was waiting at the far post to sneak it past Coletta for a shocking second goal in the 88th minute to cut Skidmore's two-goal deficit in half with a little more than two and half minutes left.
Skidmore's Peterson and Coletta both recorded four stops in the contest. St. Lawrence held a 21-12 advantage in shots, but held only a slight edge in shots on goal (7-6). The home team had eight corners to Skidmore's five and also got fouled 11 times, compared to Skidmore's six.
