Skidmore field hockey holds off Rochester, 2-1

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – The 20th ranked Skidmore College field hockey team used a goal in each half for a 2-1 win over  the University of Rochester, 2-1, in Liberty League action Friday afternoon at Thoroughbred Field. 

With the win, the Thoroughbreds improve to 7-3 and move into a three-way tie for first in the Liberty League with a 3-1 record.  The Yellowjackets fall to 9-5 and 1-3. 

In the first half, freshman Annie Rosencrans (Riverside, Conn.) took a rebound off the goalie's pads and drove it into the bottom half of the net to put the Thoroughbreds up 1-0 at 19:28.

Play was quiet in the second half until senior captain Chelsea Carroll(Pittstown, N.J.) recorded her first goal of the season at 52:02 off of a deflection from a corner to give Skidmore a 2-0 cushion.

The Yellowjackets answered back at 59:30 when freshman Allison Beardsley (Weedsport, N.Y.) drove from the 25 yard-line all the way in uncontested and lessened the lead to one, but that was as close as Rochester would get for the 2-1 final.

Skidmore controlled play most of the contest, holding an 18-6 shot advantage.  A tough Thoroughbred defense allowed just two shots in the first half and four in the second.  

Pearson had a solid day in goal for the Yellowjackets, picking up 13 saves with eight coming in the first half.  Sophomore goalie Liz Catinella(Sudbury, Mass.) picked up four saves in the win. 

Skidmore hosts 16th ranked William Smith College in a key Liberty League match-up Saturday at 2 p.m.
