One more tie for Skidmore men

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY -- In the final game of the Liberty League season between two defensive-minded teams, Vassar and Skidmore played to a 1-1 double overtime tie Sunday. For Vassar, it was the third overtime tie in their last four games, while Skidmore has played five league games that have resulted in deadlock.

Vassar (6-4-3, 1-3-3) was able to force overtime with a game-tying goal with 1:30 remaining in the game. It came in a frantic last five minutes for the Brewers who scored following a series of high-pressure attacks. The goal was scored by Marc Morelli (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), his first of the season following a rebound shot by Ben Scaglione (Elizabethtown, NY/Elizabethtown Lewis) that nailed off the upper right post and landed at Morelli's feet.

Skidmore's goal, in the 42nd minute of the second half after a scoreless first half, was orchestrated by a sequence of shots. The first came from Ernie Economides (Buzzards Bay, MA/Tabor Academy) whose shot was rebounded by teammate Kevin Regan (Chevy Chase, MD/Tabor Academy). The recipient of the save from Vassar goalie Jason Cetel (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) was Doug Yeates (Richmond, VT/Mount Mansfield Union) who scored his team-leading third goal drove into the net. Cetel had nine saves on the game for Vassar.

Skidmore controlled the first half, with 12 shots to Vassar's seven. Those numbers were reversed in the second half, when despite allowing a goal, the Brewers had 12 shots to Skidmore's four.

Skidmore goalie Chris Ford (Ann Arbor, MI/Greenhills) made 14 saves on the afternoon. Perhaps his biggest came in the 66th minute when Vassar's Ben Fox (Dublin, NH/ConVal) drilled a shot on goal that Ford deftly saved. In the 87th minute, Ford against stopped a Fox point-on shot.

Skidmore plays next Oct. 27 against Green Mountain at 2:00 pm.
